Missions Team

Our Missions Team supports and coordinates the 34+ mission projects of VUMC. We have local, national and international projects that are supported throughout the year. Our focus for this year is continued support of meals and visiting with the men of the Rescue Mission and meals to the community of Sarah Jane Johnson UMC. We work with the Broome County Council of Churches in their mission to Broome County Jail. VUMC coordinates 3 to 4 food drives per year and delivers these donations to the local food pantry--Our Lady of Sorrows Church. We send members of VUMC to the Haiti VIM mission several times a year, to assist with on-going projects. We also support Habitat For Humanity projects. In June of each year, the congregation celebrates "Reaching Up-Reaching Out Sunday" and assists local people who may need a little help with gardening or light household repairs. The Missions Team reviews on-going requests for assistance from areas in need and recommends action to the church. We are an active church, who believes in the glory and joy of working and giving.

Helping Haiti 2015

Since 1995, the Haiti Partnership has been sending volunteer mission teams to Haiti to build schools and churches, to provide humanitarian aid, and to do God's work alongside the Haitian people.   Our Pastor, Mike Willis, and many members of Vestal UMC have traveled to Haiti with teams over the years.

Through many years of generosity, much has been accomplished in Haiti:

  • Sent over 12,000 school bags to Haiti made by Sunday Schools, Vacation Bible Schools and United Methodist Women.

  • Provided many hygiene kits, school scholarships, emergency relief funds and other needed supplies.

  • Began a micro-credit program to start local business opportunities.

  • Provided salaries for seven teachers and a director at the Hermitage School, first opened in September 2005.

  • Sent over 90 teams of Volunteers In Mission (VIMs) to Haiti despite frequent political unrest.

  • Sent over 650 people as VIMs - many of whom have gone several times.

The Haiti Partnership anticipates sending at least seven teams to Haiti in the next conference year. Each volunteer is responsible to raising about $1,400 for their own travel, room and board, etc., as well as required immunizations, passports, etc. The HELPING HAITI offerings pay for project costs and other ministries in Haiti.

CHOW Food Collection

This is an ongoing ministry of Vestal United Methodist Church. In our church lobby we have a CHOW barrel. Members and friends continuously drop off donations of needed food items. When the barrel is full, we call the CHOW office and they schedule a pick-up. Thank you for your generosity in helping your neighbors in need!
